MPP Jessica Bell offers condolences following the tragic death of a cyclist in University-Rosedale

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP Transit Critic Jessica Bell (University-Rosedale) released the following statement after a fatal incident involving a cyclist in her riding:
“I am deeply distressed to learn a cyclist has died after being struck by a vehicle near Kensington Market. I offer my sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.
The death of this man is one death too many. This terrible tragedy serves to remind us of the vital importance of road safety in our community. We have a public health crisis on our streets and it’s clear our current approach isn’t working.
Everyone on our roads, including cyclists, pedestrians, seniors, kids, drivers, and emergency road workers, has a right to feel safe.
We must commit to the fundamental message that fatalities and serious injuries on our roads are preventable, and we must strive to reduce traffic-related deaths and injuries to zero.”
On March 12, 2020, MPP Bell tabled a Private Member’s Bill, the Vision Zero Strategy Act, 2020, which calls on the provincial government to develop a strategy for reducing road deaths and serious injuries to zero through road design, safety rules, and education.
